Vice – Chancellor of Benue State University, Makurdi, Prof. Msugh Kembe has hinted that the University would soon introduce short term courses in Events Management and public safety.
Prof. Kembe gave this indication on Friday while receiving the Commissioner of Police for Gombe State, Mr. Austine Iwar, on a courtesy visit to his office.
He was responding to observations by the visiting Commissioner of Police that restiveness among youths was a product of ignorance and illiteracy which could only be minimized through education and skills acquisition.
According to Prof. Kembe, by introducing such programmes, the University hopes to meet its Corporate Social Responsibility Obligation to its immediate community by taking off the streets youths in the State, some of who embraced amnesty granted them by the Samuel Ortom led Administration last year.
The Gombe State Commissioner of Police Mr. Austin Iwar said as a Pioneer Trainee on the concept of community policing in the Nigeria Police Force, he felt the need to compare notes with the Vice – Chancellor on handling of Students agitations and possible remedies.
He decried the occasional conflicts of roles between different security organizations at public events and stressed the need for the University to mount short term courses on public safety and security whose products would complement the job of regular security services.
The Police Commissioner said he was impressed with the development and academic attainments of the University over the years and urged the professor Kembe – led Management to sustain the steady growth.
