The station had yesterday, during the news commentary, mentioned the second gate of the institution together with areas along Kassim Ibrahim road and Yaman Park as pick-up spots for prostitutes in the state capital, Makurdi.
In a statement by the Student Union President, Comrade Martins Orjime, the students condemned the reports saying it was only aimed to tarnish the image of the institution.
He added that the state desist from such reports as Benue State University is an academic environment and not a club.
” My attention has been drawn to a Radio commentary this evening describing the BSU second gate as a standing spot for prostitutes. I write on behaf of the entire students of Benue State University Makurdi to condemn that report.
” Our students at this time are very busy with preparing for their exams and I see no reason why favour seekers will write such baseless commentary about our students.
“I therefore call on all those who are out to tarnish the image of our great university and our most obedient students to desist from writing such commentaries as Benue State University is an academic environment and not a club. ” he stressed.
A cross section of students who spoke with BENUE.COM.NG also condemned the reports saying the female students were being unfairly given a bad name.
Precilla, a 300 level student of mass communication said, ” there’s nothing like that at second gate. Maybe they go to town but BSU girls don’t stand on the school gate waiting to be picked up”
Another female student who wouldn’t disclose her identity said, ” we seriously need an apology from Radio Benue. How can they say BSU girls are prostitutes? They just want to give us a bad name”.
Fater, a 200 level Law Student agreed some girls he called “runs girls” were involved in such acts but not within the campus.
“It’s true. Some of these runs girls are involved but they don’t do it within campus, neither do they stand on the school gate.” he said.
Other students who disagreed with the report added that they believed some prostitutes were faking to be BSU students while they are not, just to raise their value before clients.
