The Students’ Union (SU) Government Of the Benue State University, Makurdi has suspended the Benue State University Medical Students Association of the College of Health Sciences, from participating in the Students’ Union activities as a result of non-remittance of its dues to the union’s treasury account.
The decision was taken by the Students’s Union executive council during its cabinet meeting held on the 14th of June, 2016.
It read in part, “the union has reached an agreement to suspend the College of health Sciences (BESUMSA) from participating in its activities failure to remit its dues to the unions’s account which the body have not been complying.”
Speaking with our correspondent, the president of the Student Union, Comrade Orjime Martin Luter, said he has sent a copy of the letter to the college and has been issued to the president of BESUMSA college of health Sciences.
According to him, the decision is in pursuance to section 9, part 3(A) of the union’s constitution which states that, only members who have fulfilled their financial obligations to the SU are qualified to participate in the union or eligible to vote for and will be allowed to vote.
He also said under section 7, part 2(A) of the students Union cabinet Act, states that all members involed to be responsible for the day-to-day activities of the union.
Reacting to the development, the president of BESUMSA, Comrade Abicha Edward said, the letter sent to them was inappropriate and wrong.
Abicha said was unaware that dues were to be paid to the SU, explaining that students of BESUMSA didn’t pay separate dues but rather included them in their school fees just as every other student. He maintained that the letter sent by the SU was wrong and did not follow due process.
It remains to be seen how this plays out as BESUMSA is one of the strongest student associations in the University.
